Know which council provides the service
Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council have different responsibilities. Start with the city council for services such as waste and recycling, planning, housing and local council tax. Kent County Council is the starting point for county services including highways, libraries and social care.
The Canterbury district includes surrounding villages as well as Whitstable and Herne Bay. Parish councils can provide another local contact in villages, but they do not replace the city or county authority for services those bodies deliver.
Community spaces and neighbourhood connections
Northgate Community Centre and Thanington Neighbourhood Resource Centre offer places to connect with activities and services in their neighbourhoods. Westgate Hall is a city-centre venue for markets, community events and other gatherings. Contact the venue about the particular session or room you need rather than assuming all activities are available whenever the building is open.
For village life, parish notices and local halls are useful routes to clubs, meetings and volunteering. The city centre is only one part of the area, so look for groups close to where you live as well as city-wide organisations.
Finding support and giving time
Catching Lives supports people who are homeless or insecurely housed in Canterbury and East Kent. Canterbury Umbrella provides a community setting and support focused on mental wellbeing. Their own websites explain the services and ways to get involved.
Volunteering can mean helping with a regular activity, sharing a practical skill or supporting a particular project. Ask the organisation about current opportunities and any training or commitment involved. For business-related issues in the city centre, Canterbury BID’s support information is a useful separate starting point.
