Give the independent streets time
The King’s Mile brings together streets around Palace Street, Sun Street, Guildhall Street, Orange Street, The Borough and Northgate. Its independent shops cover books, art, gifts, clothing and specialist interests, with cafés and places to eat close by.
Rather than treating it as one quick detour, build a short loop through the smaller streets around the Cathedral. Burgate and the Buttermarket connect naturally with this part of the city, while St Peter’s Street leads towards Westgate and St Dunstan’s.
Whitefriars and practical city shopping
Whitefriars is the main modern shopping area near the bus station, with larger fashion and lifestyle names alongside food and drink. It serves a different purpose from the smaller historic lanes, so a visit can combine the two rather than choosing only one.
For everyday errands, check the actual street and entrance before setting out. Shops in Wincheap, St Dunstan’s and nearby villages may be a better fit for a particular purchase or a shorter local journey than the busiest central streets.
Books, records, flowers and useful specialist shops
The Chaucer Bookshop on Beer Cart Lane offers antiquarian and secondhand books, while Vinylstore Jr adds an independent record-shopping stop. County Clothes has a Canterbury menswear branch, and local florists provide another reason to look beyond general high-street shopping.
For trade supplies or a larger item, contact the shop with the product details before travelling. A plumbing supplier, bicycle showroom or studio florist may work differently from a conventional central shop. The directory groups these businesses by their actual service, helping you find the right kind of seller.
